You can save your WhatsApp data using Google Drive and / or a local backup. Local backups are performed automatically every day at 2 am and will back up your database to a file on your phone.
Google Drive
You can save your
discussions and media files in Google Drive. So if you change your phone or get
a new device, your discussions and media are safe. To use Google Drive, please
make sure the following is true:
You must be signed
into Google Drive on your phone.
Google Play
Services should be installed (available only on Android 2.3.4 and higher).
Your Google Drive
account must have sufficient space to house all your WhatsApp data.
Your phone must
have enough free space in order to create the backup.
How to save Google
Drive
Open WhatsApp
Go to Menu butting;
Settings & gt; Discussion and calls> Backup discussions.
Press Save to
Google Drive and set the backup frequency to your liking or press Save to save
immediately.
You will be
prompted to select a Google account on which to perform the backup. If you do
not have a Google account, tap Add accounts when prompted. Please memorize the
account you use for backup.
Press Save to
select via the network on which you want the backup to be effect. Note that
doing a backup while connected to cell data can lead to increased data charges.
Important note
about Google Drive
The first full
backup can take time. Please leave your phone connected to a power outlet.
You can modify the
backup frequency, the account you save and which connection to use for backup
any time in Button Menu> Settings> Discussion and calls>
Backup discussions.
Whenever you do a
Google Drive Backup into a Google account, the previous backup will be
overwritten. It is not possible to restore an old backup Drive.
Restore a backup
or transfer
WhatsApp will
prompt you to restore your discussions and media files from a backup when you
check your phone number. Simply press, "Restore" when prompted. If
WhatsApp detects no backup, it could be that:
You are not logged
in to the same Google Account.
You do not use the
same phone number as the one that was used to create the backup.
SD card and / or
historical discussions are corrupt.
A backup file does
not exist in the Google Drive account or locally in the phone.
Note: The easiest
way to transfer data to a new phone is to use Google Drive. If you want to use
a local backup, you need to transfer the files to the new phone using a
computer, a file explorer or an SD card. If your data is not stored in the / sd
card / WhatsApp / you should see the internal storage and main storage folders.
Restoring an older
local backup
Your phone will
store up to 7 days of local backup files (Google Drive will only have recent
backups). If you want to restore a local backup, which is not the latest,
follow the steps below:
Download a file
manager. Here is a list: File Managers and Explorers.
In File Manager,
go to SD card / WhatsApp / Databases. If your data is not stored on your SD
card, you should see internal storage or main storage instead of sd card.
Rename the backup
file you want to restore from MSGSTORE-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt8 in msg
store.db.crypt8.
Uninstall and
WhatsApp.
Install WhatsApp.
Tap Restore when
prompted.
Troubleshooting
backup and restore issues
If you cannot
perform a Google Drive Backup, please try the following steps:
Verify that you
add a Google Account to your phone.
Make sure you have
enough space in your Google Drive account to back. You can see how much space
you have available in your Google Drive on the bottom left of the screen.
Verify that Google
Play services have been installed on your phone. Note: Google Play services are
only available on Android 2.3.4 and higher.
If you try to save
using a cellular data connection, make sure that you have data for WhatsApp and
Google Play services. Please contact your operator if you are not sure.
Try to perform the
backup on a different network (for example, try to connect to Wi-Fi if you cannot
use cellular data).
If you cannot
restore a backup Google Drive, please try the following steps:
Make sure that you
try to restore data much the same phone number and Google Account that you used
when creating the backup.
Make sure there is
enough space in your phone to restore the backup.
Verify that Google
Play services have been installed on your phone. Note: Google Play services are
only available on Android 2.3.4 and higher.
Make sure your
battery is fully charged or that your phone is plugged into a power outlet.
Make sure your
phone is connected to a powerful and reliable network. If the restore fails
when connected to cellular data, please try to connect to Wi-Fi.
